St Peter upon Cornhill

St Peter upon Cornhill stands at the corner of Cornhill and Gracechurch Street in the City of London. It is an Anglican church of medieval or possibly Roman origin, rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666. The church occupies the highest point in the City, directly above the foundations of a Roman basilica built around AD 90–120. Excavations in the 19th century revealed an adjoining room with a tessellated floor and yellow panels with black borders, possibly a shrine room or antechamber. The church’s alignment matches the basilica’s lines, differing by only two degrees, and its understructure may have reused the basilica’s solid 2nd-century walls. The church’s early history is tied to claims of a Roman foundation by King Lucius, the first Christian king in Britain, around AD 179. Though debated, evidence includes a 1417 ruling by the Mayor of London that St Peter’s was the first church in London, predating St Paul’s Cathedral founded in 604. Nineteenth-century excavations also uncovered a brass plate in the vestry, inscribed with the Lucius legend, replacing an earlier tablet destroyed in the Great Fire. The church’s medieval importance is further shown by its mention in a 1038 will and its role as one of four parochial schools established by Henry VI in 1447. Today, St Peter upon Cornhill serves as a satellite church for the parish of St Helen’s Bishopsgate, hosting the St Helen’s 10am congregation for Sunday services and mid-week Bible studies. The church’s interior reflects Wren’s 17th-century rebuilding, though traces of its Roman and medieval past remain beneath and around it. Visitors can see the inscribed brass plate in the vestry, a tangible link to the church’s contested origins. The surrounding area, once the heart of Roman London, offers a quiet contrast to the modern City’s bustle, with the church standing as a quiet witness to centuries of history.
