St. Sebald am Heiligenstein is a small Roman Catholic pilgrimage church standing on the summit of the steep Heiligenstein ridge in the market town of Gaflenz, Upper Austria. The 782-metre peak rises above dense woodland, and the church is the only one in Austria dedicated to Saint Sebald of Nuremberg. A rocky outcrop, a cave and a spring below once drew pre-Christian worshippers, and the site has been protected as a monument since the 20th century.

The church’s fame grew after Sebald’s canonisation in 1425, when pilgrims flocked to the summit. A 1554 tax list shows that fifteen per cent of Gaflenz men were named Sebald, and even during the Reformation many still climbed for services. The present late-Gothic nave dates from the mid-15th century, while the Baroque Sebald Chapel and its grotto were added in the 17th. Inside, the high altar holds relics of several saints, including Veronica’s veil and the apostle Andrew.

Visitors follow a winding path up the wooded slope to the churchyard gate. The plain stone cube of the nave is capped by a tall hipped roof, and the five-sided choir projects to the east. Inside, the nave is light and simple, with a plain ribbed vault. The Sebald Chapel shelters a small cave where pilgrims pray for marriage and children, and the surrounding ridge offers wide views over the Enns valley.
