Lavanttal Alps

The Lavanttal Alps stretch between the Mur and Drava rivers in the Austrian state of Styria and into Slovenia. They form part of the Central Eastern Alps and are named after the Lavant valley and river that winds through their centre. The range includes several distinct sub-ranges, each with its own character and peaks rising above 2,000 metres. The Seetal Alps run along the Mur from Scheifling to Zeltweg, while the Saualpe lies further west in Carinthia. The Packalpe and Stubalpe extend from Obdach Saddle to the Packsattel, and the Koralpe marks the southern border with Slovenia. These mountains are worth visiting for their varied landscapes and accessible high points. The highest summit is the Zirbitzkogel at 2,396 metres, a popular destination for hikers seeking wide views. The Ameringkogel reaches 2,187 metres and offers open ridges and alpine meadows. The Kozjak Mountains along the Austrian-Slovenian border provide a quieter experience with gentle slopes and wooded valleys. The Gleinalpe connects to the Graz Basin and is crossed by a long tunnel, linking different regions. A visitor finds well-marked paths through open alpine pastures and dense forests. The Zirbitzkogel has a small lake near its summit and a refuge hut for walkers. The Saualpe features the Klippitztörl Pass, a gateway to high meadows and clear mountain streams. The Koralpe is known for its juniper heaths and long-distance walking trails. The Kozjak Mountains offer quiet trails with views into Slovenia and along the Drava valley.
