St John's Church, Gateshead Fell

St John’s Church stands on the highest point of Gateshead Fell, overlooking the town from Church Road in Sheriff Hill. Built in the early 19th century, it was one of many Commissioners’ churches funded partly by a £1,000 grant from the Church Building Commission. The foundation stone was laid in 1824 by Rev. John Collinson on Sour Milk Hill, a spot chosen for its commanding view. Construction cost £2,742 and took just over a year, with the church consecrated in August 1825. In the 1990s, meeting rooms, toilets and a kitchen were added at the rear. The church remains an active Anglican parish and is listed at Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. The building follows Gothic Revival style, constructed from ashlar stone with a Welsh slate roof. Its plan includes a nave, a short chancel and a west tower topped with a spire. The tower features diagonal buttresses and an embattled parapet, while the side windows are lancets. Inside, the two-manual organ was made by Harrison and Harrison and installed in 2000, having previously been in St Aidan’s Church, Blackhill. The church’s design reflects the ambitions of its time, when new places of worship were needed across industrialising northern towns. Visitors approach along Church Road to find a solid stone church set against the skyline. The tower rises above the nave, its spire visible from a distance. Inside, the lancet windows allow light into the nave, while the organ occupies a prominent position. The rear additions blend discreetly with the original structure, providing modern facilities without disrupting the church’s character. From the churchyard, views stretch across Gateshead and beyond, a reminder of why this spot was chosen two centuries ago.
