Evangelisch-lutherische St. Peter und Paul

The evangelisch-lutherische Kirche St. Peter und Paul stands in Bruck, a district of Erlangen in Mittelfranken. It occupies a prominent place in the historic village core between the Fürther Straße and the Regnitz river. The church is the oldest building of worship in Bruck and serves the local Lutheran congregation. The church’s value lies in its layered past. Beneath the present floor lie the remains of a 12th-century Romanesque predecessor, uncovered in 1958. The current Gothic structure was built around 1400, enlarged from the earlier church. Its 68-metre-high tower, a landmark of Bruck, carries four small watchtowers and a steep octagonal spire. The tower’s east side bears the date 1475, marking its completion after repairs following the First Margrave War. Inside, medieval artworks survive, including a Madonna from 1390 and a high altar with life-size figures by Veit Stoß’s school from 1508. Visitors find a church shaped by centuries of change. The nave’s ceiling, decorated by the Leinberger family in 1726, shows a painted Ascension of Christ framed by elaborate stucco. The Baroque pulpit of 1680 rests on a carved Moses, while the 1893 organ by Johannes Strebel offers twenty registers across two manuals and pedal. Outside, a stretch of the original 5.5-metre-high defensive wall still stands on the west side, partly hidden by later buildings. To the north, a small chapel built as a 15th-century ossuary remains accessible even when the church itself is closed.
