Barclosh Castle

Barclosh Castle stands as a quiet ruin in Dumfries and Galloway, 3.2 kilometres north-east of Dalbeattie. Built in the 16th century, it was once a tower house with thick stone walls. Today only a single wall remains, twelve metres thick and eight metres high. The site overlooks farmland and distant hills. A single arched doorway marks where the entrance once was. Ivy now clings to the weathered stone. The castle’s modest remains still tell a story of power and defence. In the 16th century such tower houses defended local families against raids. Martin Coventry’s *The Castles of Scotland* recognises Barclosh as one of many such strongholds across the region. Its thick walls show how seriously defence was taken. The ruin offers a glimpse of life in the turbulent borderlands of the time. Visitors find a peaceful spot among fields and hedgerows. A short path leads from the road to the crumbling wall. The view stretches across rolling farmland under wide skies. Wildflowers grow around the base of the ruin. The silence is broken only by birds and the wind.
