Zone Point

Zone Point juts into Falmouth Bay near St Mawes on the Roseland peninsula. The Cornish name Sawan Hir means long chasm, describing the narrow inlet below the cliffs. The point lies about 500 metres east-southeast of St Anthony’s Lighthouse on St Anthony Head. The cliffs block land access to the small beach between Zone Point and the lighthouse. Atlantic grey seals often gather on this beach, and pups can be spotted from the headland or the water. The headland itself is covered in pasture that slopes down to scrubby vegetation. The South West Coast Path runs along the top, marking where the grassland meets the rougher coastal scrub. Baptista Boazio’s 1597 map of the River Fal first records the name as Savenheer. The long cove below the cliffs gives the place its Cornish identity. Visitors walk the South West Coast Path to reach Zone Point. The pasture offers wide views over Falmouth Bay towards the Lizard. The scrubby slopes below hide the inaccessible beach where seals rest. The cliffs drop sharply to the water, creating a dramatic coastal scene. The contrast between the open headland and the sheltered cove makes the spot memorable.
