Roseland Peninsula

The Roseland Peninsula is a finger of land in south-west Cornwall, jutting between the River Fal and the English Channel. It begins where the hills of Tregony drop to the tidal creeks and ends at the lighthouse on St Anthony’s Head. The villages of St Mawes, Gerrans, Veryan, Ruanlanihorne and Philleigh sit along its lanes, each with stone cottages and churchyards sheltered in the valleys. The name comes from the old Cornish word for heathland, rhos, which once covered the ridges above the creeks. John Norden’s 1584 map was the first to call the place Roseland, and later writers kept the title for the parishes that thrust seaward. Historians still argue over the exact starting point, but the modern Roseland Plan of 2015 settled on five civil parishes that share the gorse-covered uplands and sheltered coves. Place House at St Anthony was home to the Spry family for centuries and appears in travel writing as a landmark of quiet authority. The peninsula also carries a darker story: in 1998 Lyn Bryant was killed while walking her dog near Ruan High Lanes, a case that remains unsolved and has cost millions to investigate. Film-makers have used the peninsula too; Channel 4’s 1992 series The Camomile Lawn was shot at Broom Parc, and a 2009 documentary revived the old tale that Jesus may have walked these cliffs. Visitors find lanes that climb through heather and gorse, then drop to coves where boats bob in the Fal estuary. At St Mawes the castle keeps watch over the harbour, while Veryan’s round churches stand in fields of sheep. The coastal footpath passes St Anthony’s Head lighthouse and offers wide views to the Lizard and Dodman. Along the creekside walks at Philleigh and Ruanlanihorne the water reflects the wooded hills, and at low tide the mudflats reveal oystercatchers and curlews. The peninsula keeps its quiet rhythm, where every bend in the road can open a new stretch of water and sky.
