Burgruine Rauhenstein
Burgruine Rauhenstein is a medieval castle ruin in Baden bei Wien, Lower Austria. It was built in the 12th century and once had a tower standing 20 metres high. The castle is known for its dramatic setting above the valley. Karl van Beethoven, nephew of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, attempted suicide here in July 1826. The castle’s history and its connection to Beethoven’s family give it a sombre significance. Franz Xaver Schweickhardt documented the ruin in his 19th-century topographical work. The site reflects the turbulent past of Lower Austria’s medieval strongholds. Visitors find a striking ruin with remnants of walls and foundations. The tower’s remains still rise above the landscape. The surrounding area offers quiet walks through the valley below. The castle’s position provides views over the surrounding countryside. Its history and setting make it a place of quiet reflection.
