Winsaberg

Winsaberg stands in the Gutensteiner Alpen of Lower Austria, rising to 1 009 metres. It sits on the ridge between the Piesting and Schwarzatal valleys, halfway between the Unterberg to the north and the Schneeberg to the south. The Winsabergsattel at 833 metres separates it from the higher Streimling to the north and the Hutberg to the south. A more prominent spur swings south-west over the Hahnstab and Handlesberg, forming the main crest of the Handlesberg–Haberkogel chain. The mountain marks the boundary between the parishes of Gutenstein, Rohr im Gebirge and Schwarzau im Gebirge. Three streams begin on its flanks: the Zellenbach in the Bodinggraben to the west, the Steinbach to the south and the Urgersbach to the east. The first two feed the Schwarza while the Urgersbach flows toward the Piesting. Winsaberg is rarely climbed and remains largely a working forest area. Its slopes are quiet, with no marked trails or shelters. Visitors who reach the summit find only a modest trig point and open woodland views across the surrounding valleys. The ridge walk offers glimpses of the higher peaks to north and south, but the mountain itself keeps its distance from the usual routes.
