Observation Tower Ahlbeck
The Observation Tower Ahlbeck stands on the Baltic island of Usedom in the Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald. It is a steel framework tower built for views over the coast. The tower rises 50 metres and has three enclosed observation decks. Above these decks a fourth platform holds aerials for mobile phone services. Ahlbeck is one of three Baltic seaside resorts on the island known for their 19th-century pier and beach promenade. The tower is worth the journey for its clear views across the Baltic Sea and the nearby coastline. Visitors can see the Polish coast on clear days. The structure itself is an example of industrial architecture from the early 20th century. It remains a landmark for both locals and holidaymakers. The tower also serves as a functional site for mobile networks. A visitor climbs the internal staircase or takes the lift to the decks. From the top deck the horizon stretches unbroken in every direction. On the middle deck information boards explain local landmarks visible below. The lowest deck offers a sheltered place to rest while taking in the scene. The surrounding area includes the beach and the resort’s historic promenade.
