Slesvighus

Slesvighus stands in the Danish cultural centre of Schleswig, on the island of Lolfoden west of the town centre. Built in 1901 as a hotel, the building later became a Danish meeting place in 1922. It now houses the town’s Danish secretariat, the local office of Flensborg Avis and several meeting rooms. Two theatres occupy the upper floors, one seating 306 people and the other 80. The building also once contained a church hall and library rooms. The house has been remodelled many times since it opened. After the war it served as a Danish kindergarten, and in the 1980s it briefly held a church and library. A major renovation in 2010–11 turned it into a venue for the Schleswig-Holstein state theatre once the old playhouse was demolished. The large stage and smaller hall now host plays, concerts and public meetings. Visitors find a busy cultural hub with two theatres, rehearsal spaces and offices. The façade still shows traces of its hotel past, while inside the foyers and staircases reflect later Danish influences. The building sits among quiet streets near the waterfront, a short walk from the town’s main square.
