Pfarrkirche Katzelsdorf

The parish church of Katzelsdorf stands on a small hill in the village of Katzelsdorf, part of Bernhardsthal municipality in the Mistelbach district of Lower Austria. Built in late historicist style with neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements, it replaced an earlier church first mentioned as a branch of Feldsberg parish in the 17th century. The present building was constructed between 1905 and 1908 to plans by the architect Carl Weinbrenner. The church’s exterior combines red brick with covered buttresses and tall pointed windows set in three-light openings. A steep, multi-flight staircase leads from the village up to the hilltop. The main façade features a richly decorated gable with a rose window above the portal, crowned by a statue of Christ under a canopy. A square tower rises at the southern corner of the choir, its spire rising above pointed louvred openings. Inside, the four-bay nave and single-bay choir are vaulted in ribbed patterns, with side chapels under barrel vaults. The high altar, dating from the time of construction, is of stone and gilded wood, topped by a carved retable showing angels playing instruments. The stained glass, made in 1906, depicts the patron saint Bartholomew alongside figures such as Florian and Sebastian. The organ, with fifteen stops, was built by the Rieger brothers in 1908.
