Teignmouth lighthouse

Teignmouth lighthouse stands at the southern end of the Den promenade in Teignmouth, Devon. It is a white-painted cylindrical brick tower about ten to eleven metres tall, topped by a red lantern dome. A red polycarbonate leading light on Powderham Terrace works with the lighthouse to guide ships. The entrance to the River Teign has shifting sands and dangerous currents, so the lighthouse was built to warn vessels. In the early 1840s the Harbour Commissioners began planning the structure, and it was finished in 1845. Since 1949 the building has been Grade II listed for its historic and architectural value. The lighthouse first showed a fixed red light powered by three gas burners with reflectors. Its light could be seen seven nautical miles out to sea, guiding vessels safely to the harbour mouth. In 1992 the exterior was repainted with a special lead-free white pigment to resist the salty sea spray. The tower is now automated and still forms part of the harbour’s aids-to-navigation under the Port Marine Safety Code. The Teignmouth Harbour Commission manages the lighthouse and other local navigation aids. It appears often in regional photographs and is mentioned in local heritage guides as part of Teignmouth’s maritime story. Visitors walk along the Den promenade to reach the lighthouse and enjoy views of the English Channel. The compact brick tower contrasts with larger coastal lighthouses, yet it clearly marks the harbour entrance. The red lantern dome is a familiar landmark in town images and heritage listings. The surrounding promenade offers space to stop and watch ships enter the River Teign. The lighthouse’s simple design and bright colours make it easy to recognise from a distance.
