Bracelet Bay

Bracelet Bay lies on the southern coast of the Gower Peninsula, just past Swansea Bay and Mumbles Head. The bay is small, lined with limestone cliffs and a pebbly shore that holds patches of sand. Tutt Hill stands to the west, dividing it from Limeslade Bay and holding a coastguard look-out station. The name may come from an old phrase meaning ‘broad slade’. Visitors first see the bay after rounding the headland, where the cliffs frame the open sea. The bay’s most striking feature is the ‘Big Apple’ kiosk, a 1930s concrete structure built as a roadside advertisement. After a vehicle strike in 2009, craftsmen repaired it in 2010. In 2019 it gained Grade II listed status for its historical importance. It remains the only survivor of several similar kiosks along this stretch of coast. The kiosk’s bold shape and bright paint make it a landmark against the grey cliffs. Paths lead along the cliffs above the bay, offering wide views over the water and headlands. The pebbled beach below is best admired from above, since currents and tides can make swimming risky. Storm waves crash against the rocks, adding to the wild scenery. On calm days the sand patches catch the light, bright against the dark pebbles. The coastguard look-out on Tutt Hill watches over the bay day and night.
