Burg Hauseck

The Burgruine Hauseck stands on a rocky outcrop above the village of Hauseck in the Franconian Switzerland nature park. It overlooks the surrounding hills and the valley below from its 505-metre summit. The ruins mark the site of a late medieval noble castle built between 1329 and 1338 by Duke Rudolph I. Only the upper castle on the rock remains partly accessible, while most of the lower castle is now private property. Archaeologists have dated the oldest masonry to the 14th century and recognise medieval and early modern remains across the site. The castle is listed as a monument and archaeological site under official protection. The Hauseck castle played a brief but colourful part in regional history. It first appears in a 1338 treaty dividing the Palatinate among the sons of Rudolph I. Within fifteen years it was pledged to King Charles IV of Bohemia, who granted it as a Bohemian fief to Konrad von Kemnath. The Kemnath family held it until 1372, when it passed through several noble hands before being bought by Stephan von Wolfstein in 1380. After changing owners again, the castle was sold to Nuremberg in 1507 and became a Pflege castle administered by the city. It was finally destroyed in 1552 during the Second Margrave War and left as a ruin. Visitors reach the upper castle by following a steep footpath up the western side of the rock. The ruins consist of low walls and foundations that trace the outline of halls and towers. From the summit there are wide views over the Franconian Jura and the village of Hauseck below. Nearby lie other castle sites such as Rupprechtstein and Hartenstein, each adding to the sense of a once-contested landscape. The lower castle area is occupied by a private house, so only the open upper section can be explored. The exposed rock and crumbling masonry give a clear impression of the castle’s former strength and its dramatic end.
