Burg Schlossberg (Uttenweiler)

The Schlossberg castle once stood six kilometres north-west of Uttenweiler in the Biberach district. Today only the grassy mound remains, rising up to fifteen metres above the old moat. The oval hilltop measures about eighteen metres long and ten metres wide, showing traces of a small medieval motte. Historians once thought it might have been a refuge fort like those described on the Uttenweiler municipal website. Yet its modest size fits better with a simple watchtower or small stronghold rather than a large defensive wall. The site lies close to the so-called Schwedenlöcher and Dobellöcher ravines, adding to its remote and quiet setting. Visitors walk a short path up the mound to see the shallow remains of the moat and the flat summit. From the top there are wide views over the surrounding farmland and woods. The place is little visited, so the only sounds are birdsong and the wind in the grass. It offers a quiet moment to imagine how the small castle once stood guard over the valley.
