Taplow burial

The Taplow Barrow is an early medieval burial mound in Taplow Court, Buckinghamshire. It stands on a hilltop once used as an Iron Age hillfort, giving wide views across the surrounding landscape. The mound was built in the seventh century during the Anglo-Saxon conversion period, when Christian influences were spreading through the region. It contained a single high-status burial with rich grave goods, now mostly in the British Museum. The site is archaeologically known as the Taplow burial and is one of the few lavish barrow burials placed within a churchyard. The burial is notable for its exceptional grave goods, including military items like a sword, three spears, and two shields, as well as drinking horns and glass beakers. Many of these items were likely made in Kent, suggesting links to the Kingdom of Kent. The excavation in 1883 revealed the most lavish Anglo-Saxon burial known at the time, surpassed only by the later discovery at Sutton Hoo. The grave goods were donated to the British Museum, where some remain on display. Visitors to the site find a grassy mound within the churchyard, standing as a reminder of the seventh-century chieftain buried beneath. The hilltop location offers long-distance views in most directions, reflecting the deliberate choice of a prominent landscape position. The mound itself is somewhat bell-shaped, possibly altered by later burials around its edges. Nearby, the remains of the Iron Age hillfort can still be traced in the earthworks. The connection between the barrow and the church raises questions about the role of such burials during the conversion period.
