St Mary's, Bryanston Square

St Mary’s stands on Wyndham Place in Bryanston Square, a brick church built in 1823–24 by Robert Smirke to close the view at the square’s lower end. Its rounded stone portico, round tower and small dome topped by a cross give it a clear silhouette against the London skyline. Grade I listed, the building cost nearly £20,000, most of which came from the Church Building Commission. The north wall faces York Street, while the main entrance looks onto Bryanston Square. Inside, the simple nave and chancel still frame the vista Smirke intended. A primary school of the same name sits beside the church, sharing its dedication to the Virgin Mary. The church has played a part in notable lives since it opened. The 1st Earl of Blessington married there, and Thomas Frognall Dibdin served as rector for more than twenty years. Samuel Augustus Barnett met his future wife during his curacy in the 1860s. Today it remains the most central Anglican church named St Mary’s in inner London and belongs to the evangelical wing of the Church of England. Since 2002 an active congregation led by Rev’d John Peters has met here, many drawn from St Paul’s Onslow Square. The building also appears on screen, standing in for Saint Jude’s in the 2019 film Last Christmas. Inside, the nave offers an uncluttered space for Sunday services at 11 am and 5.30 pm, both informal and family-friendly. Midweek groups and courses meet downstairs in the church hall, including the eight-week Life Course that welcomes people of any belief. The Centre, set up by staff, runs relationship and parenting programmes such as Circle of Security and Hold Me Tight courses. The church has also supported church planting overseas, helping teams start congregations in Auckland, Exeter, Jacksonville and Charlotte.
