Bürgle (Zimmern)
The Bürgle is a ruined hilltop castle east of Zimmern, a village that now belongs to Bisingen in the Zollernalbkreis. The site sits in a field called Burgle, where only low mounds and a shallow ditch remain. Archaeologists date its first stone buildings to the early 12th century, when it served as the seat of Count Gottfried of Zimmern, a Zollern nobleman and brother of the Zollern burggraves. His name appears in records until 1156, giving the clearest clue to the castle’s origins. After 1576 the place passed to the Hohenzollern-Hechingen line, which later abandoned the crumbling fortress. Historians recognise the Bürgle as one of the earliest Zollern strongholds in the region. The castle’s short life ended when its owners moved to more comfortable quarters elsewhere. All that survives today are grass-covered ramparts and a single depression where the great hall once stood. The site offers a quiet reminder of twelfth-century power struggles among local dynasties. Visitors can walk the low earthworks and imagine the wooden palisades that once crowned the hill. The surroundings are peaceful farmland with wide views over the Swabian Alb. A footpath leads from Zimmern up to the mound, taking about twenty minutes for a gentle climb. At the top the horizon stretches unbroken in every direction. The only sounds are the wind and the occasional tractor. The castle’s vanished halls leave behind only the shape of the land and the stories written in the soil.
