Pfarrkirche Weiler

The Roman Catholic parish church in Weiler stands on a small hill in the centre of the village in Vorarlberg. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and belongs to the Rankweil deanery of the Diocese of Feldkirch. Both the church and the adjoining cemetery are protected as historic monuments. The present building replaced an earlier chapel consecrated in 1640, which became a parish church in 1708. Between 1875 and 1876 the architect Friedrich von Schmidt designed a new church, built by Fidel Kröner. Inside, the nave has a flat wooden ceiling and pointed-arch arcaded niches. The walls are decorated with apostle paintings by Alfons Luger, while the choir windows by the Tiroler Glasmalereianstalt show the Holy Family and saints. The high altar is a carved winged retable of 1879 by Josef Bertsch, flanked by side altars executed by Johann Graber to plans by Friedrich von Schmidt. The Stations of the Cross were painted by Josef Führich in 1880. A 1731 gravestone in the nave carries the arms of Johannes Christoph Sudrell. The organ, built by Gebrüder Mayer in 1976, completes the furnishings.
