Schrocken

Schrocken stands in the Toten Gebirge on the border between Upper Austria and Styria. Its sharp pyramid shape rises to 2281 m and sends ridges north, south-west and east. The northern ridge drops 400 m to the Rottal valley while the southern slope falls into the Speikgrube basin. The western ridge plunges steeply into the Hintere Weißenbachtal, making the summit a favourite for those seeking wide views. The mountain is known for its fine outlook, especially from the Hutterer Höß and along the Mölbing–Warscheneck ridge crossing. A summit cross and logbook mark the top, where climbers sign their names after the final scramble. The Hans-Rubenzucker-Weg climbs the north ridge with fixed rungs and a cable to help over the hardest section. The route is graded A/B, showing it is not for beginners. Walkers on the Hochmölbing route leave from the Liezener Hut and follow the high ridge. The steep western face and the broad southern basin give contrasting scenery. From the top the eye follows the long ridges and deep valleys of the Toten Gebirge. The air is clearest at dawn, when the first light catches the sharp summit of Schrocken.
