Beinn na Lap

Beinn na Lap is a broad, long Munro standing on the north shore of Loch Ossian in the Highland council area. Its Gaelic name means ‘speckled mountain’, a reference to the pale and dark patches on its slopes. The peak stretches almost the full length of the loch, with two long ridges running southwest and northeast from a wide, rounded summit plateau. The mountain offers one of the shortest climbs of any Munro, rising only about 400 metres above the nearby Corrour Station. The railway halt sits at 408 metres on the West Highland Line, so walkers can reach the foot of the hill by train. From there a forest track leads to Loch Ossian youth hostel, and the ascent continues over open moor and heather towards the southwest ridge. The summit plateau is marked by a cairn and gives wide views over Loch Ossian and the surrounding Grampians. The northeast ridge drops steeply to a small lochan called Loch na Lap at about 600 metres. Beyond it lie three lower tops—Creagan Ruadh, Creag Mhòr and Meall Glas-uaine Mhòr—each with cliffs falling east into the River Ossian valley. The mountain’s gentle western slopes contrast with its rougher eastern flanks, making it a straightforward yet rewarding hill for walkers.
