Wachtberg

The Wachtberg rises to 1 931 m in the Goldberggruppe of the Central Alps, standing on the border between Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein. Two streams begin on its slopes: the Luggauer Bach in the valley towards the Jedlkopf, and the Breitenberger Mühlbach on the eastern flanks. Five alpine pastures lie around the mountain, from the Gröbner-Heimalm in the north-east to the Walchalm in the west, where the long-distance Salzburger Almenweg crosses. The Grabnerhof inn sits on the north-eastern slopes above Breitenberg village. Marble, phyllite and calcareous mica-schist from the Tauern window form the summit and north-east ridges, while prasinite appears on the southern side. The summit zone is a protected Gamswild resting area from 1 December to 31 May, and the Biberalm red-deer reserve on the southern slope is closed from 1 November to 31 May. Below the rocky top, spruce boulder forests and green alder thickets grow. The Wachtberg Pass is one of the Gastein valley’s traditional Krampus groups, first active from 1992 to 1994 and re-founded in 2006. This group performs in Bad Hofgastein during the winter season. The mountain’s geology and wildlife zones give it a quiet, rugged character outside the busy valley. Visitors reach the Walchalm pasture by following the Salzburger Almenweg, where cattle graze in summer and the path offers wide views. The Grabnerhof provides food and shelter on the lower north-east slopes. The closed resting zones protect chamois and red deer, so walkers keep to marked routes. The Krampus group’s masked processions add a seasonal highlight in nearby Bad Hofgastein. From the rocky summit ridge the Tauern peaks stretch away to the south.
