Burgstall Schäfferloch

The Burgstall Schäfferloch is a vanished spur castle perched on a 390-metre ridge above a sharp bend in the Kocher river. It once stood east of the hamlet of Schönenberg, part of Untermünkheim in the Schwäbisch Hall district. The site overlooks the valley from a narrow spur that drops steeply on three sides. Archaeologists recognise it as a classic medieval spur castle, built to control the river crossing below. Only earthworks and a low mound remain of the original stone buildings. The site is worth visiting for its clear traces of a once-formidable fortress. Written records from 1600 mention the castle only as a memory, yet the surviving earthworks still show the outline of the keep and defensive ditches. Alois Schneider’s 1995 study of castles in the Schwäbisch Hall district lists Schäfferloch among the best-preserved examples of its kind. The location itself tells the story of why such a castle was built here: the river’s loop made it a strategic point for controlling travel and trade. Visitors find a quiet grassy mound surrounded by shallow ditches that once formed the outer defences. The ridge offers wide views across the Kocher valley and towards the distant hills. A short walk from Schönenberg brings walkers to the site without crossing private land. The remains are small but unmistakable, giving a sense of how the fortress once dominated the landscape. The lack of modern intrusions lets the medieval earthworks speak for themselves.
