Rudolph-Brandes-Obelisk

The Rudolph-Brandes-Obelisk stands in Bad Salzuflen, a spa town in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a simple sandstone pyramid on a granite cube, set on three steps and about seven metres tall. The monument honours Rudolph Brandes, an apothecary and scientist who died in 1842 at the age of forty-seven. Friends from the local Apothecaries’ Association proposed the memorial after his death. Heinrich Hasse, Carl Piderit and Georg Overbeck led the committee that collected donations across Germany. The obelisk was finished in 1848 and placed on a small rise near the town cemetery. A copper box containing Brandes’s writings was sealed inside the base when it was built. The unveiling ceremony on 18 October 1848 drew speeches, choirs and a civic procession from the old apothecary opposite the town hall. Carl Piderit formally handed the monument to the city for protection. Today the obelisk stands beside the renamed Rudolph-Brandes-Allee, a quiet street lined with lime trees. Visitors find the four-line inscription ‘Andenken an Rudolph Brandes 1848’ on its front face. The granite cube beneath is the original boulder from the Teutoburg Forest, hewn and polished for its purpose. The surrounding cemetery still contains Brandes’s grave, linking the living path to the memory of the man honoured here.
