Burg Dagestein
Burg Dagestein stands on the edge of Vilseck in the Oberpfalz, a medieval castle complex with a five-storey keep and a walled courtyard. The oldest parts date from the 11th or 12th century, though the first written record comes from the late 12th century. A 1205 document mentions Megelaus of Dagestein, and after the dynasty ended the castle took the town’s name. In the 15th century it became a water castle, later a granary and prison under Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades. The keep was rebuilt between 1999 and 2002 after decades of neglect. The castle shows layers of history in its architecture. The enceinte and parts of the tower survive from the earliest period, while the keep’s lower floors were built around 1200 in sandstone ashlar. A tall elevated entrance once led to the chapel of Saint George on the second floor. The zwinger and filled-in moat once guarded the east and west sides, and a tithe barn stands beside the inner courtyard. These structures tell the story of a fortress that shifted from noble residence to state storehouse. Visitors walk through the cobbled courtyard past the keep’s weathered walls and climb inside to see the restored floors. The chapel site on the second level is marked by a simple arch, and the enceinte’s 11th-century stones can be traced along the perimeter. From the top of the keep there are views across Vilseck and the surrounding countryside. The tithe barn and zwinger add to the sense of a once-busy stronghold. The castle’s quiet presence today reflects centuries of change, yet its medieval bones remain clearly visible.
