Teck

Burg Teck stands on the Teckberg ridge north of the Swabian Jura and south of Kirchheim unter Teck. The original ducal castle crowned the 775-metre ridge before it was destroyed in the German Peasants’ War of 1525. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century builders raised new structures on the ruins. The Teckturm observation tower with its refuge shelter was completed in 1889. Nearby, Mörike Hall was added in 1933 and later became a restaurant with sleeping rooms. The site has belonged to the Schwäbischer Albverein since 1941. In 1999 the surrounding area was declared a protected landscape. The castle’s name also lives on in the title Prince of Teck, first granted in 1863 to the children of Duke Alexander of Württemberg. The most famous bearer was Mary of Teck, who became queen consort to George V of the United Kingdom. Visitors reach the ridge along paths that start close to Kirchheim unter Teck. The Teckturm offers wide views across the Swabian Alb. Mörike Hall serves as a meeting place and overnight stop. The protected slopes around the castle are rich in flora and quiet walking trails. On clear days the view stretches as far as the Alps.
