Leuchtturm Obereversand

The black four-sided tower on a lattice frame stands in Dorum-Neufeld on the Wurster North Sea coast. It was built in 1886–87 by the AG Weser for the Bremen, Oldenburg and Prussia joint authority. Two viewing galleries and a lantern crown the structure, reached by separate stairways. The tower once guided ships through the Weser estuary with a white fixed light until 1923. Its original lens had a 500 mm focal length and a three-wick oil lamp visible for twelve nautical miles. A stronger petroleum glow lamp replaced it in 1905. Today a 400 mm lens and a five-watt energy-saving bulb operate automatically via a light sensor. Visitors climb the external spiral stair to the first gallery at 17 m height. Inside, three internal staircases lead to the second gallery. Outside, the spiral stair serves as an emergency escape in case of fire. The tower now marks the entrance to Dorum-Neufeld harbour and anchors the Wattenmeer visitor centre.
