Burgstelle Schallon

The Burgstelle Schallon stands on the Stierjörgenfelsen at 835 metres above sea level, 3.8 kilometres north of Wurmlingen’s church. It is the remains of a hilltop fort built in the Middle Ages. The site lies close to Rietheim-Weilheim in the Tuttlingen district of Baden-Württemberg. The Gadner-Atlas of 1612 first recorded the castle’s name. By 1604 only fragments of walls and one cellar survived. Schallon is worth visiting for its quiet evidence of medieval life. The Gadner-Atlas shows it was still partly standing early in the 17th century. Archaeologists have found traces of the original structure. The site offers a clear view over the surrounding countryside. It is one of the few places where the outline of a lost castle can still be traced. Visitors walk over grassy slopes where the walls once rose. The rocky outcrop gives a sense of the fort’s commanding position. There are no buildings left, only low stone lines and the old cellar hollow. The area is peaceful, with open fields and distant woods. The climb rewards walkers with wide views across the valley.
