The sender stands on the Rotbühl hill near Hainstetten in the Upper Palatinate. Deutsche Funkturm, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, operates it for television and radio broadcasts. The site also serves as a transmission point for mobile phone signals and satellite television.

The tower replaced an earlier plan for a smaller transmitter on the Mariahilfberg in Amberg. In 1952 a 50-metre mast was built on the Rotbühl to cover almost the whole of the Upper Palatinate. Later expansions included a 127-metre steel lattice mast in 1985 for additional services such as mobile telephony and satellite links.

Visitors see a tall steel mast with its foundations 667 metres above sea level. Nearby stands a small service building that once housed operating rooms and living quarters. The site remains an active broadcasting centre for DVB-T2 HD television and DAB radio.
