Pfarrkirche Strengberg

The Catholic parish church of Mariae Himmelfahrt stands in the centre of Strengberg, a market town in the Amstetten district of Lower Austria. It is a late-Gothic hall church with a Baroque interior, built on the site of a 11th-century foundation. The church has been protected as a listed monument since the 19th century. The church is worth visiting for its layered history and fine craftsmanship. A 1031 deed records its dedication under the double patronage of the Assumption and Saint Quirinus. After fires and collapses, the nave was rebuilt in the 16th century and the tower restored in the 17th. Josef Friedl remodelled the interior in 1952, adding painted vaults by Franz Pitza that show the parish’s founding and a visit by Pope Pius VI. Inside, the high altar of 1781 frames a painting of the Assumption by Andreas Streicher. The 12th-century font and 16th-century holy-water stoup survive from earlier eras. Late-Gothic windows and a five-storey west tower with a steep roof add to the exterior’s varied textures. The churchyard and nearby cemetery contain Baroque and Rococo grave slabs of local postmasters and priests.
