Schloss Burtenbach

Schloss Burtenbach stands in the market town of Burtenbach in the Günzburg district of Swabia. The three-storey building with its mansard roof and prominent corner turret has belonged to the von Stetten family since 1855. It sits below the main road, surrounded by a dense, expansive park. A decorative garden lies to the west, alongside various farm buildings. The castle’s history stretches back to 1532, when Ulrich Burggraf sold the lordship to Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach. The Schertlins held power for seven generations before ownership passed through several noble families. In 1739–40, the Thannhausen stonemason and master builder Johann Kaspar Radmüller restored the castle in the Baroque style after a fire. A century later, Friedrich von Halder expanded it into its present form. Visitors enter the courtyard via two drives, one from the west and one from the east. The main entrance leads through steps into a large hall, with the library and winter garden in front. The Baroque staircase gives access to the spacious rooms on the three residential floors. Four five-sided turrets mark the corners of the building, each rising to the eaves of the mansard roof. The former gardener’s house now houses the estate office, its current form dating from around 1900.
