Salzburger Wehrgeschichtliches Museum

The Salzburger Wehrgeschichtliches Museum stands in the Schwarzenberg barracks at Wals-Siezenheim. It presents two thousand years of military history through uniforms, medals, weapons and documents. The collection includes everything from a Roman legionary’s gladius to modern rifles, plus large equipment like tanks and cannons outside. The museum is worth visiting because it shows Salzburg’s changing role under prince-archbishops, the imperial army and the republic. Exhibitions have featured rare items such as Josef Radetzky’s Trachtenberg war plan. Special displays have examined the First Republic, Maria Theresia’s campaigns and Salzburg’s year of crisis in 1816. Inside, visitors find rooms filled with weapons, maps, photographs and books. Outside, retired military vehicles line the grounds. The museum also publishes research and supports students, linking its collection to wider scholarship.
