Ringwall Unterbuch

The Ringwall Unterbuch is an ancient circular rampart just north of Unterbuch, a village on the edge of Vilshofen an der Donau in Lower Bavaria. The site dates from either prehistory or the early Middle Ages, and its earthworks still stretch for 1,560 metres. A deep ditch runs alongside the wall, marking the old defences. Archaeologists classify it as a protected monument under the code D-2-7344-0140. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation recognises its importance as an archaeological landscape. Scholars have studied the Ringwall since the 19th century. Heinrich Habel and Helga Himen included it in their 1985 survey of monuments across Bavaria. Johannes Pätzold devoted a whole chapter to it in his 1983 work on prehistoric and early historic sites in Lower Bavaria. These publications helped place Unterbuch on the map of regional archaeology. The site remains a key reference point for anyone tracing the region’s early settlement patterns. Visitors walk along the grassy rampart and peer down into the shallow ditch that once held back attackers. The earthworks enclose a broad, level area where traces of former buildings can still be felt underfoot. From the top of the wall there are wide views over the surrounding farmland and the valley of the Donau. The site is quiet, with only the sound of wind and birds breaking the silence. It offers a direct link to the people who lived here thousands of years ago.
