Theater der Stadt Schweinfurt

The Theatre of the City of Schweinfurt stands in the city’s Châteaudun Park, between the old town and the Neutor district, close to the town wall. The modern building, completed in 1966, replaced a garden pavilion on the site of the former Christina Schanze. Its five-sided design and white-plaster façades blend with the surrounding park rather than dominate it. Inside, the main auditorium seats 750 for plays or 695 for musical performances, while the upper foyer holds 200 and a studio stage can seat 155. Over 80,000 visitors attend the three venues each year, including 6,600 regular subscribers from Schweinfurt and nearby regions. The theatre is the second home of the Bamberger Symphoniker – Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie, which gave its 500th concert there in March 2019. The programme ranges from classical concerts and Christmas performances to contemporary dance and plays, aiming to appeal across all age groups. The building’s technical facilities allow large-scale touring productions to be mounted, with a variable portal up to 12 metres wide and 7 metres high. A side stage and goods lift connect the stage to the street for deliveries. Inside, the two-storey foyer is lit by tall south-facing windows and Murano-glass installations. A balcony overlooks the park and city skyline, while the auditorium walls feature triangular colour structures that serve both decoration and lighting. Behind the stage, areas prepare artists and handle scenery. A curved staircase leads from the foyer straight into the public park during intervals. The current renovation adds an underground extension beneath the stage, uncovering remains of the Christina Schanze while renewing roofs, rigging and technical systems.
