Hohenecken Castle

Burg Hohenecken is a ruined spur castle from the Hohenstaufen era, standing on Schlossberg hill above the Kaiserslautern district of Hohenecken in Rheinland-Pfalz. It rises 363 metres above sea level and commands views over the surrounding countryside. The castle was built on a narrow ridge, giving it a long, narrow footprint of about fifty by nine metres. Its most striking feature is a massive shield wall, twenty-five metres wide and eleven metres high. A pentagonal bergfried, or keep, rises behind this wall, both dating from around 1200. The castle once belonged to a barony that included several villages now part of Kaiserslautern. The castle’s history is tied to the ministeriales of Kaiserslautern, who took the name von Hohenecken after receiving the castle as a fief. In 1214, Frederick II granted them the right to patronise Ramstein, strengthening their position. The castle remained an imperial fief for centuries before falling into decline in the early modern period. It was damaged during the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and besieged by Prince-Elector Charles Louis in 1668. French troops destroyed it in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession. Experts consider it one of the finest examples of Hohenstaufen castles still standing. Visitors today walk through the outer ward and moat to reach the upper and lower baileys. The shield wall and bergfried dominate the ruins, offering a clear sense of the castle’s original strength. From the hilltop, wide views stretch across the Pfalz countryside. The site is a popular spot for walkers and photographers, who come to admire the medieval structure against the landscape. The ruins stand as a reminder of the castle’s turbulent past and its role in regional history.
