Dyfi National Nature Reserve

The Dyfi National Nature Reserve lies on the west coast of Wales where the River Dyfi meets the sea. It stretches across three distinct landscapes: the shifting sands of Ynyslas Sand Dunes, the wide, silty flats of the Dyfi Estuary, and the wetland bog of Cors Fochno. The reserve sits eleven kilometres north of Aberystwyth in Ceredigion and has been protected since 1969. Natural Resources Wales keeps the habitats in good order for wildlife and visitors alike. The estuary itself is a wide, shallow basin where tides expose acres of mud that teem with invertebrates. Saltmarsh plants grow along the water’s edge, stabilising the soft ground and feeding the next link in the food chain. The reserve is worth the journey because it holds internationally important numbers of birds. Twice a year thousands of migratory waders and wildfowl pause here to rest and feed. Among them are bar-tailed godwits, black-tailed godwits and little egrets, all counted by wardens each season. Cors Fochno shelters one of the largest and best-preserved examples of a raised bog in Britain. The bog’s peat layers, up to eight metres deep in places, store carbon and hold records of past climate stretching back millennia. Scientists from nearby universities use the site to study carbon capture and ancient pollen trapped in the peat. On the ground a visitor finds a network of boardwalks and trails that wind through each landscape. At Ynyslas the dunes rise in ridges and slacks, their hollows filled with marram grass and orchids in summer. The estuary flats stretch away under wide skies where oystercatchers probe the mud and curlews call at low tide. Cors Fochno’s boardwalk crosses the bog’s dome, giving views over sphagnum pools and cotton-grass tussocks. Information panels explain how the reserve’s habitats are managed and why they matter. Benches face the water so walkers can sit and watch the shifting light on the estuary.
