Pfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, Vordernberg

The parish church of Vordernberg stands in the market town of Vordernberg in the Leoben district of Styria. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the Diocese of Graz-Seckau. The church and two stone figures in front of it are protected monuments. The building began as a church of Our Lady constructed by Christoph Unvermög before 1461. It was extended after 1644 and again in 1661, then suffered a fire in 1743. The rectangular choir was rebuilt after the fire with a Platzl vault and Rococo stucco from the late 18th century. The tower, completed in 1698, has a classical tent roof and houses a bell cast in 1744. Inside, the five-bay nave is covered by a barrel vault with ribbed stucco panels from the mid-17th century. The high altar, made in 1895, features a painting by Friedrich Emert. The pulpit, carved in 1765 by Matthäus Krenauer, displays reliefs of biblical scenes and the four continents. Outside, the churchyard contains wrought-iron grave markers from the late 18th and 19th centuries.
