Schloss Allmendingen

Schloss Allmendingen stands in the village of Grossallmendingen, part of Allmendingen in the Alb-Donau district. It consists of two linked buildings: the Old Castle and the New Castle. The Old Castle was once a moated water castle, surrounded by ditches and towers. The New Castle was built in 1783–84 by the Freyberg-Eisenberg family, who still own the estate today. A long connecting wing was added in 1784 to join the two parts. The park behind the buildings was laid out in the late 19th century. The estate has belonged to the Freyberg family for centuries. Johannes Renner, imperial councillor, is recorded as owner in 1516. After disputes with Urspring Abbey, the property passed to the city of Ehingen and then to the Freybergs. The New Castle’s three-winged design centres on a small garden, and a chapel stands to the north. Inside the chapel is a gravestone for Walburga of Copenhagen, who died in 1789. Visitors find the Old Castle’s remaining west tower and the moat traces along the former water defences. The New Castle’s main courtyard is framed by three wings, with the chapel and garden on the north and east sides. The late-19th-century park offers mature trees and open lawns behind the buildings. A gravelled forecourt once held a fountain, and the chapel’s interior keeps the historic gravestone intact.
