Desborough Castle

Desborough Castle stands on the southern side of the River Wye valley in Buckinghamshire, within the Chiltern Hills. The site includes a Norman ringwork built partly over an older mound, which may have been a Saxon moot. A square enclosure surrounds both, possibly dating to the Iron Age or Late Bronze Age. The valley has long served as a key route, with known trackways since the Bronze Age. Today the fort sits in a landscaped grass area below the Castlefield council estate, overlooking High Wycombe. The castle is recognised as a scheduled monument of national importance. It was listed in 1933 for its archaeological value, yet faces ongoing challenges from vandalism and fly tipping. In 2020 Historic England placed it on the Heritage at Risk Register due to serious localised damage. Despite these issues, the site remains an important link to the past. Its position along historic routes adds to its significance in the landscape. Visitors find a grassy enclosure with earthworks from different periods. The Norman ringwork and earlier mound are still visible within the square boundary. The site offers views over High Wycombe and the surrounding Chiltern Hills. Paths lead through the landscaped area, allowing close inspection of the defences. The setting remains peaceful, despite its proximity to modern housing. The castle’s layered history can be read in the earthworks and the views it commands.
