Pfarrkirche hl. Wolfgang, St. Wolfgang, Weitra

The late-Gothic parish church of St Wolfgang stands on a raised terrace above the village of St Wolfgang bei Weitra in northern Lower Austria. Built on a high stone plinth to level the slope, its broad three-aisled nave and long choir form a single compact block. A simple west front with three circular tracery windows rises to a slender ridge turret added after the 1877 fire. The church is worth visiting for its well-preserved late-Gothic fabric and later fittings. The nave’s ribbed vaults rest on octagonal piers that pierce the string course, while the choir vault carries heraldic bosses. Wall paintings uncovered in 1979 show fourteen scenes from the life of St Wolfgang and the Adoration of the Magi, together with donor shields from about 1430. The 1692–94 high altar by Balthasar Threyer frames late-15th-century statues of St Erasmus, St Wolfgang and St Nicholas beneath a Baroque crowning group. Inside, the red-marble octagonal font of 1514 and the late-Gothic iron-bound sacrament niche share space with the 1765 organ loft bearing two oriel windows. A rokokko side altar holds Martin Johann Schmidt’s Death of St Joseph, while the 1785 classical pulpit stands against the north wall. Outside, the broad churchyard wall and the polygonal-ended aisles frame views across the surrounding countryside.
