Barockschloss Königshain

The Barockschloss Königshain stands in the village of Königshain in the Upper Lusatia region of eastern Saxony. It is part of a large estate complex that includes the older Renaissance castle and several farm buildings. Built between 1764 and 1766, the palace is a fine example of Dresden Baroque style and has been protected as a historic monument since its completion. The estate belonged to the von Schachmann family from 1660 until 1789, when it passed to Carl Heinrich Ludwig von Heynitz through marriage. The last private owner, Dietrich von Heynitz, lost the property in 1945 during land reform in the Soviet zone. After wartime use by the Red Army, the building served as a kindergarten before the community bought it in the 1990s. Major restoration work between 1997 and 2006 returned the entire estate to its former condition. The main block is a two-storey building with nine window axes. On the courtyard side, the central three axes form a projecting pavilion, and the outer axes are framed by smaller pavilions. The garden façade has a curved central projection with a basket-arched doorway beneath a small hipped roof. A hipped roof with dormer windows covers the whole structure, and two curved wings link the main building to the kitchen and gentlemen’s pavilions.
