Pfarrkirche Alland

The Pfarrkirche Alland stands at the eastern edge of Alland village, where the Schwechat and Allander streams meet in the Wienerwald region of Lower Austria. A Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to Saints George and Margaret, it belongs to Heiligenkreuz Abbey and the Diocese of Vienna. The church and its former cemetery are protected monuments. The building’s history reaches back to at least 1115, making it older than Heiligenkreuz Abbey itself. Romanesque in origin, it gained a Gothic north aisle and west tower in the 13th century, followed by a south chapel in the 14th. After damage in the 16th- and 17th-century Turkish wars, a baroque façade and upper tower storeys were added around 1800. War damage in 1945 led to a rebuilt interior in pseudo-basilica form and a new baroque-style tower top by 1954. Inside, medieval wall paintings survive alongside modern works by Karl Steiner. A late-17th-century hanging crucifix dominates the choir, while the south aisle holds an 18th-century crucifix and Madonna. The late-gothic stone font and a 1675 bell add to the furnishings. Romanesque and gothic grave slabs line the walls, recording local clergy and families from the 13th to the 18th centuries.
