Schnippenburg

The Schnippenburg is a small Iron-Age ring-wall site of about 1.4 hectares, built before the Romans reached the region. It stands on a spur of the Venner Egge ridge in the Wiehen Hills, within the Northern Teutoburg Forest Nature Park. The spur rises to 125 metres above sea level, yet the site itself offers little wide view because higher ridges stand thirty metres above it on either side. Its importance lay instead in its position where two long-distance routes crossed: an old track of the Bremer Heerstraße, running from Osnabrück, and the Hellweg before Santforde. The builders chose a spot that controlled movement without commanding a distant panorama. The site is worth visiting because it sheds light on a little-known phase of central European prehistory. Dendrochronology of oak timbers from its front wall dates the fort to 268 ±10 BC, and charcoal from the 1983 excavations shows it burned after only thirty to fifty years of use. Archaeologists recovered 1,500 objects inside the enclosure, including iron tools and weapons, bronze jewellery, and evidence of local iron smelting. The finds point to a central place for trade, craft and ritual rather than a purely military stronghold. The Schnippenburg belongs to a group of small lightly fortified Iron-Age enclosures spread from Silesia to the Dutch province of Drenthe, making it the north-westernmost example. Visitors today see only faint earthworks: low banks and sharp breaks in slope where the walls once stood. Information boards mark the site, and a small museum in nearby Schwagstorf displays the finds and explains the excavations. A reconstructed Iron-Age farmhouse at Darpvenne, a few kilometres away, offers another way to picture life at the time. The woods and fields around the spur still carry the traces of ancient paths that once linked the Schnippenburg to its wider world.
