Steinkopf
The Steinkopf is a low wooded spur rising from the Reinhardswald, a forested ridge in northern Hesse. It stands in the south-eastern corner of the Gutsbezirk Reinhardswald, a municipal-free forest district, where the land falls away eastward toward the Weser valley. The hill’s eastern slope marks the border with Lower Saxony, while the small Trockene Ahle stream runs north of its slopes and the Piepengraben trickles southward from the Prinzenquelle Sandborn. The hill belongs to the Staatsforst Gahrenberg and is crossed by long-distance footpaths. The Märchenlandweg passes its eastern flank on the way from Reinhardshagen to Hann. Münden, while the Reinhardswald-Ostweg swings past the south-western side. Below, in the deeply cut Weser valley, the B80 carries the Dornröschen-Route of the German Fairy Tale Road. Local legend places a flute-playing servant beneath the ancient Kaspars Baum at a crossroads west of the summit. Visitors walk through mixed beech and oak woods that cloak the slopes of the Steinkopf. The summit itself is unmarked, offering only a quiet clearing among the trees. From the eastern edge the land drops steeply into the Weser valley, where the river curves past the former monastery estate of Hilwartshausen. The paths are quiet, used mainly by ramblers tracing the Märchenlandweg or the Reinhardswald-Ostweg, with few signs of modern development.
