Yester Parish Church, Gifford

Yester Parish Church stands in the quiet village of Gifford in East Lothian. The present building, completed in 1708, occupies a prominent spot near the main road junction and the village war memorial. It is a Category A listed building, recognised for its architectural importance. The church replaced earlier places of worship, including St Bathan’s Chapel from 1241, whose ruins lie in the woods beside Yester House. Another former church once stood at Duncanlaw, a now vanished settlement south-east of Gifford. The village itself forms part of a larger parish that also includes Bolton and Saltoun. The church holds notable graves that draw visitors. Among them are Admiral of the Fleet Lord John Hay and the 10th and 12th Marquesses of Tweeddale. The grave of Gian Carlo Menotti, the Italian composer, is also found here. The church’s history is further marked by the birth of John Witherspoon in the Gifford manse in 1723. Witherspoon later became a leading figure in the Presbyterian Church in America and the only clergyman to sign the United States Declaration of Independence. Inside, the church offers a plain but dignified interior that reflects its 18th-century origins. The building sits close to the village centre, making it easy to reach after passing the war memorial. The surrounding area includes peaceful woodlands where the ruins of St Bathan’s Chapel can still be seen. Gifford itself remains a small, unhurried village, providing a calm setting for a visit. The church and its surroundings offer a quiet reminder of Scotland’s religious and political past.
