St Mary's Collegiate Church

St Mary’s Collegiate Church stands in Haddington, East Lothian, on a broad churchyard well away from the town centre. Begun in 1380 and still growing, it is Scotland’s longest church, stretching 62.8 metres from east to west in early Gothic style. The building survived desecration in the 16th century and has been restored many times, most fully in the 1970s. Its cruciform plan and uniform design show careful adherence to the original scheme. The tower and nave were the first parts repaired for worship, while later centuries added aisles, pinnacles and a new west front. The church is worth the journey for its scale and craftsmanship. The choir’s aisled arcades carry foliate carvings and a 1877 east window with four lights and a bagpipe-playing angel finial. The north transept holds a medieval sacristy now used as an ecumenical chapel for the Maitland family. The tower’s triple lancets and figure niches recall plans for a crown spire never completed. Inside, sexpartite vaulting spans the nave, and a William Birnie Rhind pulpit and font from 1891 stand beside ancient burgh arms found in the 1970s. Visitors find a sequence of spaces and details. The transepts contain a Burne-Jones window and a Seton memorial, while the Lauderdale Aisle commemorates the Maitlands. The nave’s west front shows a six-light window with mouchettes and vesica piscis forms above a carved trumeau of the Arma Christi. Stained glass by Burne-Jones, the Ballantyne Brothers and William Wilson fills the south and north walls, and a 1990 organ gallery sits in the north transept. The tower bells, reinstalled in 1999, ring again after centuries of silence.
