Pfarrkirche Kleinlobming

The Catholic parish church of St Thomas stands on a gentle slope at the eastern edge of Kleinlobming in the Lobmingtal valley. It belongs to the Diocese of Graz-Seckau and is protected as a listed monument together with its walled cemetery. The building occupies a quiet spot away from the main village road, its stone walls rising above rows of headstones. The church preserves parts of its Romanesque core from the 13th century, though a fire in 1917 led to a complete rebuilding in 1919. Inside, the nave is covered by barrel vaulting and the semicircular apse still shows its original Romanesque window. A wooden west gallery overlooks the nave, while the south tower rises in octagonal stages topped by a bulbous dome. The early Baroque high altar, moved here from Sauerbrunn castle, dates from the late 17th century and features figures carved by Balthasar Prandtstätter in the 18th century. The surrounding cemetery contains a neogothic calvary group with a sorrowful Virgin. Nearby stands the old parish house, its tall hipped roof dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The village keeps older traditions alive, including processions to local farms that recall the parish’s medieval origins.
