Pfarrkirche Neukirchen am Ostrong

The parish church of Neukirchen am Ostrong stands high above the village in southern Lower Austria. Its broad tower rises above a Romanesque core topped by a Gothic hall church, all set against the rolling hills of the Melk district. The building and its surrounding cemetery are protected monuments, marking the site’s long spiritual importance. Built around a 12th-century nave and tower, the church grew through the centuries. A 14th-century choir and north chapel were added, then in the 16th century two aisles, a south sacristy and a west gallery were completed. Wall paintings from the 1370s show the Three Kings and a row of apostles, while later stained glass depicts the flight into Egypt and a kneeling donor. The early 17th-century high altar houses a Gothic Madonna and Child from 1375. Inside, four naves meet under a fan-vaulted ceiling supported by slender octagonal piers. The lower side aisles open into the main space through pointed arches, their brick ribs exposed after a 1966 restoration. The choir, raised behind a deep pointed arch, contains a 14th-century rood screen and a sacrament niche with delicate tracery. Outside, the west tower’s 15th-century louvred openings and the steeply pitched roofs frame views across the valley.
